An expansion joint divider is a material placed in the joint between concrete slabs when the concrete is poured. They are designed to protect the slabs from cracking when they contract and expand from the changes in tempreture. The material acts as a shock absorber to reduce the stress from the slab’s movement and keeps water from getting under the slabs which can eventually start to lift the slab.
Overtime, the expansion joint material will dry out and rot. Once this happens, it is time to have them replaced.
