Most patching solutions attempt to replace failed pavement and restore it to its original condition, but fail to solve the underlying issues responsible for the problem: BASE DEFECTS & MOVEMENT.
To truly fix failed pavement, a repair must provide greater flexibility and adhesion than was present in the original pavement. The use of mastic goes far beyond traditional pavement, creating an upgraded repair designed specifically to accommodate base defects and movement. Mastic solves a wide array of pavement maintenance problems quickly and permanently. It is a fantastic solution for wide cracks, cupping, depressions, potholes, voids, open seams, alligatored areas, fatigue cracking, and more. Mastic is designed to handle traffic, snowplows, water, weather and pedestrian travel so well that it’s easy to forget a problem ever existed.

POT HOLES, VOIDS, DEPRESSIONS
ProTec specializes in repairing voids, pot holes, wide cracks, and depressions. Traditional repair methods such as cold/hot patching are a temporary fix and seldom last more than a couple years. Before long, you will be spending money again to fix the same problem. We use Mastics. They are specifically designed for voids, wide cracks and depressions that are too small for re-paving (cut and replace), and is far superior to anything else. The key here is the ability of the mastic to bond with the asphalt, yet remain flexible. It is a versatile, hot-applied, pourable, self adhesive, ridged asphalt binder containing select aggregate to ensure good load bearing and skid resistant characteristics. Repairs using Mastics are a great option and provide years of service life.
WIDE CRACKS ( >1.5″)
When cracks in the asphalt are wider than (>1.5″), regular hot pour crack sealant cannot be used since the material will not hold up to the thermal movement of the asphalt. Rather than cutting out & replacing the asphalt which is expensive, we repair the cracks using Mastics. The mastic fills the void but remains flexible enough to withstand the contraction and expansion of the pavement. These repairs will often outlast the surrounding asphalt.
The photo above shows a failed attempt to repair fatigue cracking with standard hot pour crack sealant. As you can see, the cracks continued to form and the initial repair did nothing to address the cause. The customer will end up spending more money to fix the same problem. A repair using Mastic would have been the right choice and saved the customer from additional expenses.
DISTRESSES, FATIGUE & ALLIGATOR CRACKING
Once again, traditional methods to repair these issues are temporary and within a year or two the problem will come back. Prior to Mastics becoming available, the only viable solution was cut & replace. Mastics is a great alternative that provides long term results, and is more cost effective. It creates a one piece bond yet remains flexible enough to move with the asphalt.
BENEFITS OF MASTIC:
- Does not require compaction to achieve 100% density
- Contains select aggregate mixed in with the polymer modified binder
- Stays flexible and durable, withstands weather, traffic, thermal movement
- Completely waterproof and provides an air-tight seal
- Superior adhesion, bonds to both asphalt or concrete
